These nut rattles are still made the original way, with no plastic strips replacing the raffia in the rope - not easy to find. Those from Calabar, a seaport city in South Western Nigeria, are really original. There are actually two faces back to back carved into the wood handle. As for the "nuts", they are the shells of Kola nuts. The older generation still chew the nuts as a stimulant.
